Part 5, Continued:
“A Heath in the Desert! Who is Moab?”

“Moab is destroyed;
her little ones have caused a cry to be heard…
Flee, save your lives,
and be like the heath in the wilderness.”

Now in yesterday’s devotional, the command to flee from Moab was showcased…
.
Listen… “Moab is destroyed; her little ones have caused a cry to be heard… Flee, save your lives, and be like the heath in the wilderness.” Jeremiah 46:4, 6
.
And it was lightly touched upon that Moab represents the apostate portion of the Church.

But why does Moab represent the apostate portion of the Church?

“STUDY TO SHOW THYSELF APPROVED”
2nd Timothy 2:15

The answer to this question is a very complex answer. And those who are just hearing this concept for the first time, must be willing to patiently search the Scriptures day by day to confirm these difficult truths…
.
Listen… “These (Bereans) were more noble…in that they received the Word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.” Acts 17:
.
God is giving us a picture about these noble Bereans, in hopes that today’s Christians will emulate the open-mindedness of those noble Bereans, when searching out new Bible truth. And with all the close-mindedness in the church-world, it is refreshing whenever a Bible student does actually go against the overwhelming current of the Church establishment, and begins to prayerfully search out new truths which have biblical validity!

THE TWO JERUSALEMS
.
The Apostle, Paul, revealed a great truth concerning the allegorical nature of the Bible… “Tell me…do ye not hear the law? For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid (of the flesh), the other by a freewoman…by promise. Which things are an allegory…For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children. But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.” Galatians 4:21-22, 24-26 (condensed for brevity. To read all, click here)

So Paul reveals here that the story of Abraham is a historic parable. It really happened, but was orchestrated by God to present a picture of the Gospel and a picture of the two portions of the Church: the faithful portion and the apostate portion.

COMPARING SPIRITUAL THINGS
.
But notice that Paul asked the Galatians, “Do you not hear the Law?” In other words, Paul was perhaps indicating that those Galatians should have really understood the parabolic nature of the Old Testament.
.
Instead, Paul had to plainly tell them what that story was really all about: the two Covenants, both ‘Old’ as well as ‘New’. And those who are of the apostate portion of the Church are yet under the Old Covenant.

THE ALLEGORICAL OLD TESTAMENT
.
Now this revelation opens up all those Old Testament historical events, as being allegorical pictures of various aspects of the Gospel of Christ…
.
Listen to Jesus… “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of Me.” John 5:39
.
Jesus here was speaking primarily of the Old Testament, since the New Testament had not yet been written at the time He made this above statement!

And so, by comparing spiritual things with spiritual, a Bible student can begin to unlock the various allegories found throughout the Old Testament (and the New Testament).

PROMISED LAND: A SPIRITUAL PROMISE
.
Now just how do we know what Moab represented?
.
Well, one great principle is found in Genesis 15… “In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:” Genesis 15:18
.
Now, even though God actually made this promise to Abraham, it was never literally fulfilled. And yet it lays down a great big clue as to what all those nations surrounding Israel actually represented. And so, as we read about the Philistines or about Moab, or even about Egypt, or Babylon, or Sodom, etc., we are actually reading about the apostate portion of God’s people.

SODOM & EGYPT REPRESENTS GOD’S CITY
.
Let’s hear what the Bible has to say about Sodom and Egypt… “And their dead bodies (the two prophets) shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.” Revelation 11:8
.
So now, here we further understand that Sodom and Egypt actually represented Jerusalem, where our Lord was crucified. And Ezekiel also speaks further of this spiritual truth.
.
Yes, the apostate condition of Jerusalem was like Sodom and Egypt, according to the Bible. And God often uses such comparisons in Scripture, to give us a clearer picture of the nature of our apostasy.
.
But as we have already heard Paul declare, “Jerusalem which is now, and in bondage with her children” represents the apostate portion of the Church! So now we are “comparing spiritual things with spiritual” (1st Corinthians 2:13). And by comparing spiritual truths, we begin to realize the allegorical nature of the Bible.
