Daily Devotional, Year 3 – March 1

.

As The Flower of the Field,

.

Part 10:

“Longevity Is Worthless…In This World!”

“If a man beget an hundred children,

and live many years,

so that the days of his years be many,

and his soul be not filled with good,

and also that he have no burial;

I say, that an untimely birth is better than he.”

Ecclesiastes 6:3

.

Have you ever wished that you might live to be a hundred years old?

.

Maybe you are wishing that wish, right this very moment! Or maybe you wish you could live for hundreds of years like all those people who lived before the Great Flood of Noah’s day.

.

Well, that’s not so realistic, is it?

.

But, if you really took care of yourself, you just might make it to 90, or possibly even 100!

BETTER IS A MISCARRIAGE!

.

But listen to Solomon, who by the way, was the wisest mortal who ever lived…

“If a man beget an hundred children,

and live many years, so that the days of his years be many,

and his soul be not filled with good,

and also that he have no burial;

I say, that an untimely birth is better than he.”

Ecclesiastes 6:3

.

This above verse from Solomon’s swansong, the Book of Ecclesiastes, reveals that without being filled with good nor any burial, it tells us that a miscarriage is better than he! But what in the world does Solomon mean by saying…“his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial;”?

.

Well of course, the Bible is a spiritual Book, and so, spiritual things must be compared with spiritual. And by comparing other related verses, this simply means that “his soul be not filled with good (goodness of Christ), and also that he have no burial (buried with Christ);”

.

In other words, God is saying here that without Salvation, a long life is meaningless!

.

But why is a long life meaningless?

.

NO MORE MEMORY!

.

You see, it doesn’t really matter how long you live in this life.

.

What really matters is if you live again, in the life to come! That’s the only thing that matters! And if you have been given the gift of eternal life you’re going to live forever! But if you live a hundred wonderful years in this world and do not have eternal life, then you will simply die and be no more!

.

Your memory will vanquish away…forever!

.

THE HORRIBLE TRUTH!

.

Listen to Solomon’s father, David…“Man that is in honour, and understandeth not, is like the beasts that perish.” Psalm 49:20

.

Here we see that those who have great riches and honor in this world, and yet do not have understanding (of Christ’s Salvation), will simply go down to their grave one day, and exist no more!

.

How horrible! To merely cease to exist!

.

Why do so many people refuse the wonderful gift of everlasting life?

.

It makes no sense!

.

A GET-OUT-OF-HELL-FREE CARD!

.

And so, when we really think it through, it doesn’t matter whether you live to 100, or you die as a teenager.

.

**All that really mattered was, before you died, that you asked Jesus for a, “Get out of Hell free” card!**

.

Because if you or I go to the grave without that little card, then it won’t matter how long you lived! Because without everlasting life you will simply go into oblivion! Your memory will perish! And you will be forgotten…forever! Your earthly existence will have no meaning nor importance!

.

And whatever good thing you think you did, or whatever contribution to humanity you think you made will finally get buried under the sands of time!

LET’S BEGIN OUR END-TIME EXODUS!

.

And so, let us begin this very day to ask God for Salvation!

.

Let’s renounce this hopeless and worthless world, and seek after the only thing that has any real meaning: Salvation!

.

A BRAND-NEW WORLD IS COMING!

.

Listen…“For thou wilt not leave my soul in Hell;

neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

Thou wilt show me the path of life:

in thy presence is fullness of joy;

at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.”

Psalm 16:10, 11

.

That’s right! As this passage reveals, everlasting life will be filled with “pleasures for evermore!”

.

Oh no, not the sinful pleasures of this world! But instead, we will live in that Promised Land flowing with milk and honey! A land where nobody grows old and sick. It is a land filled with beautiful trees and lush green valleys.

.

And you will walk through endless meadows, and hear the songs and laughter of little children echoing against the everlasting hills. And in the distance, you will hear the faint sounds of bells ringing in each new morning!

.

And the entire universe will be yours to explore, as you wing your flight to worlds unknown, to proclaim the Good News that, “God is love…and His mercy endures forever and ever!”

In the beginning, God placed our first parents in a beautiful garden.

.

But as a result of sin, this world lost much of its beauty. The curse has marred, to a great extent, the pristine condition of nature. In spite of that, God has mercifully left enough beauty in nature for mankind to enjoy.

.

But though this world retains much beauty, there are still many, who are under the impression, that God’s redeemed will spend all eternity sitting on a puffy little cloud, strumming a harp. Whoever is responsible for that infamous cartoon of a man with a harp, sitting on a little cloud, was unwittingly doing the Devil’s bidding. Lucifer would love nothing more, than for people to have the discouraging notion, that Heaven is just a puffy little cloud, with nothing going on, day after day, for all eternity. Nothing could be further from the truth!

.

Do we really imagine that the same God who created that incredible garden for our first parents, would then put us through all this sorrow and hardships, only to now stick us in some boring situation, for eternity? Such people don’t know God nearly well enough.

.

Sin and rebellion has marred the original beauty of this present world. But in spite of that, there still remains some of the beauty that this planet originally possessed. But marred as it is, still the beauty and innocent joys of this present world, are just a faint reflection of what awaits all those who persevere on the upward pathway to that Celestial City of God.

.

CATCH A VISION OF THAT PROMISED LAND!

.

“And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.” Revelation 21:1, 2

.

So Signs Of Heaven encourages the reader to begin to get a vision of the New Heaven and New Earth, and begin to get excited about it. When we hear the cry of a new born baby, or the innocent laughter of little children. When we see a little forest creature having fun, or we enjoy a walk along the sand at the ocean, and hear the majestic roar of the crashing waves.

.

“Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered. ” Psalm 40:5.

.

These, and the many other joys of life were created by the One who has also gone to prepare an even more beautiful place for us to live. He knows our needs, and will provide a place far more wonderful home than this sin-cursed Earth.

.

And when we finally cross that river, and we stand together on the shores of that world to come, we will look in amazement at what He has in store for us there. And then we will know for certain, that “His mercy endures forever”, because, “God is love”!
