Gold, Frankincense, and More!

“When they saw the star,
they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.
And when they were come into the house,
they saw the young child with Mary his mother,
and fell down, and worshipped him:
and when they had opened their treasures,
they presented unto him gifts;
gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.”
Matthew 2:10, 11

Perhaps, the most well-known of all Bible stories, is that of the wise-men from th
e East, following that star to where baby Jesus lay.
.
And equally known is that they brought gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
.
Now frankincense and myrrh were sweet spices, used in the Old Testament in purification ceremonies. These were symbols of purity, being a sweet savor to God.
.
Now obviously, frankincense and myrrh cannot literally make anybody spiritually pure. So what can we glean from this little Bible account?
.
Yes, gold, frankincense and myrrh must have a deeper significance.

SPIRITUAL GOLD, FRANKINCENSE & MYRRH
.
“Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.” Ephesians 5:1, 2
.
This above passage explains the spiritual meaning of incense: Christ’s self-sacrificing life.
.
This is the sweet smell which God loves. And when the Christian purifies his or her self, transforming into Christ’s glorious image, then that Christian likewise becomes a sweetsmelling savor unto God.
.
Listen… “And every man that hath this hope in Him (meeting Jesus) purifieth himself, even as He is pure.” 1st John 3:3
.
Now of course, none of this is possible without the miracle-working power of God. And this is where 
the precious gift of gold comes in.
.
Because we are told this… “I counsel thee to buy of Me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich;” Revelation 3:18. So obviously, Christ is not counseling us to buy literal gold.
.
Listen to Job… “But he knoweth the way that I take: when He (God) hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.” Job 23:10. So Christians must purchase spiritual gold, tried in the fires of tribulations. We are that gold which God so highly values.
.
And by prayer, Bible meditation, and enduring the trials which come our way; these produce the spiritual Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh, which those wise men symbolically brought to the Lord Jesus.
.
And so, with these things in mind, the question remains to be answered: Am I also willing to be one of the wise-men in these last days? Am I willing to bring to Christ the gold, frankincense, and myrrh of a fully converted heart, and a fully dedicated life of holiness?

And just like the wise men of old, who journeyed westward, following that brilliant star, leading them to Bethlehem. We too, as wise men, must follow that brilliant star, Arcturus (Jesus), as He leads His sons northwestward…into the heavens…and onward…into eternity.
.
The call is going out to join this heavenly odyssey? The trumpet is now sounding to join the heaven-ward throng. Am I willing to forsake all (in my heart), and follow Jesus? We have nothing to lose and everything to gain…We will have all eternity to follow this heavenly star.
.
The bright shining One…Christ Jesus. For He is that true ‘bright and morning star’. (Revelation ch.22).
