How To Keep The Sabbath,
.
Part 4:
“How To Quit Working On The Sabbath”

God said “Remember the Sabbath”.
.
But sadly, it seems as if the world has forgotten the Sabbath!
.
Listen to the commandment…“Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
.
Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God:
in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son,
nor thy daughter, thy manservant,
nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle,
nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth,
the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day:
wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.”
Exodus 20:8-11
.
Now, from reading this passage it all seems pretty cut-and-dried as far as what God expects.

“And He (Jesus) said unto them, The Sabbath was made for man…”
Mark 2:27
.
And all the world is under obligation to keep that day holy…
“Now we know that what things soever the law saith,
it saith to them who are under the law:
that every mouth may be stopped,
and all the world may become guilty before God.”
Romans 3:19
.
Oh yes, the Sabbath was to be a sign between the Lord and His people (see Exodus 31:13). But this verse from Romans 3:19 declares that the whole world is also under the Law of God!

“Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind”
.
Now this devotional is not going to debate whether Friday night to Saturday night must be observed by the letter. As the Bible says concerning those observing one day, or those who consider all days are alike, “let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.” Romans 14:5
.

“THE WORKS OF THE FLESH…”
.
But merely ceasing from physical labor cannot make a day holy. And resting from physical labor cannot make a day holy either.
.
So just what work does a person need to cease from, to make a day holy?
.
Listen…“Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these;
Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations,
wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders,
drunkenness, revellings, and such like…
that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.”
Galatians 5:19-21
.
Well, truth-be-told, if a man, woman, or child can cease from this kind of work, they would truly be holy, would they not?

“THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT…”
.
But listen as this passage continues…
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering,
gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance:
against such there is no law.
And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh
with the affections and lusts.”
Galatians 5:22-24
.
Well, of course, these above verses convey a command which is seemingly impossible to keep!

So just how could we ever keep any day holy?

The fact is, we cannot keep a day holy by our own merits.
.
Then what are we to do?
.
It all seems so hopeless!

“no condemnation to them…who walk after the Spirit”
.
Well, we have to remember to keep comparing spiritual things with spiritual! In other words, the entire Bible is the Word of God!
.
And God has more to say about these things… “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” Romans 8:1
.
Yes, if we are truly “in Christ”, then we will no longer seek after the things of the flesh, but will seek after the things of the Spirit! Therefore, we are no longer condemned, because we diligently seek after the things of the Spirit!

“COME UNTO ME, AND I WILL GIVE YOU REST!”
Matthew 11:28-30
.
But just how do we do that? How do we seek after the things of the Spirit?
.
Listen again…“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against Thee.” Psalm 119:11
.
Okay! So, to sit at the feet of Jesus and hear His Word, and allow His Word to fill our hearts and minds: this is the answer to our dilemma!
.
And as we grow in grace and in the knowledge of the Lord, God will work in us to purify our hearts and burn away the rubbish that once cluttered the halls of our hearts!
.

“LET US LABOR TO ENTER INTO THAT REST”!

So as Paul exhorts…
“There remaineth therefore a rest (literally, “a Sabbath-keeping”) to the people of God.
For he that is entered into His rest,
he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from His.
Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest…
Hebrews 4:9-11
.
So, this is how we labor to enter into God’s Rest: to drench ourselves in His Word, and allow God to purify our hearts and minds!
