Daily Devotional, Year 3 – September 28

.

How To Keep The Sabbath,

.

Part 1:

“Finding Rest Unto Your Souls!”

.

“Come unto Me, all ye that labour

and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Take my yoke upon you, and learn of Me;

for I am meek and lowly in heart:

and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.”

Matthew 11:28-30

.

Here is the 4th Commandment (please excuse the blurry photo!).

The problem is, most Christians don’t know what to do with the Sabbath!

.

“THIS IS THE DAY WHICH THE LORD HATH MADE!”

Psalm 118:24

.

Well, today’s devotional will not attempt to defend one day or another, as the true New Testament Holy Day.

.

Neither will this devotional attempt to tackle the issue regarding whether “one man esteems one day above another: another esteems every day alike.” Romans 14:5.

.

No, these are not the issues to be explored today.

.

FINDING “REST UNTO YOUR SOULS”

.

Instead, it will try to explore just how we can fulfill the admonition by Jesus to…

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden,

and I will give you rest.

Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me;

for I am meek and lowly in heart:

and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.”

Matthew 11:28-30

.

These above words are among the most important in the Bible!

.

They speak of true rest, and not just a mere 24-hour cessation of physical labor!

.

Instead, they lay down a divine principle for each and every burdened soul who is called to put on the easy yoke of Jesus and begin to “break up your fallow ground” of their own sin-ladened heart! (Hosea 10:12; Jeremiah 4:3)

“PERFECT PEACE?”

Isaiah 26:3

.

But the fact is, while many do enjoy fleeting moments of peace and security which come with being a Christian, the vast majority of those who take the name of Jesus are still living in a high degree of turmoil and unrest.

.

Certainly, they (we) do not enjoy the promise found in Isaiah 26:3… “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee: because he trusteth in Thee.”

.

Yes, this above verse reveals that we can attain a far greater peace, joy, and contentment than we are now experiencing, if we will only learn to implicitly trust in the Lord with all our heart!

And so, the question of the day is just this:

“How do I attain such a perfect peace

that comes from trusting the Lord?”

A ROSIE-THE-RIVETER WORLD!

.

The fact is, from cradle to grave, the world encourages us to rely on our own strength, our own cleverness, and our own ambition as we strive for happiness and success in every area of our life!

.

A “DO-IT-YOURSELF” WORLD!

.

Just turn on the television and it won’t be long until some act of human effort is show-cased and promoted, even glorified!

.

The good guy dukes it out with the bad guy!

.

The entrepreneur claws his way up the mountain of financial success!

.

The pursued ones plot and scheme to ward off their pursuers!

.

***Our team* works hard to defeat the *other team!***

.

This faithless world constantly hammers it into our minds, that we must do it all by our own efforts!

.

“TRUST IN THE LORD WITH ALL THINE HEART”

Proverbs 3:5

Truly, we are indoctrinated into this do-it-yourself world on a 24/7/365 basis!

.

Thus, this philosophy of human self-reliance is so thoroughly ingrained and deeply etched upon the tables of our heart that it becomes extremely difficult to give up our self-striving ways, when we finally do surrender our life to Jesus!

.

“FOR WE WALK BY FAITH, NOT BY SIGHT!”

2nd Corinthians 5:7

.

But God is a patient heavenly Father.

.

And He is very willing to work day-by-day, with all those who are willing to learn of, and live by the faith-filled ways of Heaven!

.

And He will cause us to unlearn the faithless ways of man and begin to fill our hearts with His “exceeding great and precious promises!” 2nd Peter 1:4

.

“LORD, INCREASE OUR FAITH!”

And that, O child of God, is our great commission: to unlearn the faithless ways of this troubled world and begin to walk by faith in the “exceeding great and precious promises” which are scattered like glittering diamonds, found “between the lines”, throughout the entire Bible!

.

And so, today is an excellent day to begin to search out and seek after those precious gems!

.

And upon discovering them one-by-one, carefully hiding them in the treasure-chest of our heart!

.

And those who are willing to devote themselves to unceasing prayer and constant meditation of God’s Word, will begin to locate these heavenly messengers!

So why not put away our vain search for earthly treasures and begin to search for the everlasting riches found throughout the Bible, and now to also seek after those precious gem-stones that God is revealing in the heavens…
