Out of the cold, damp Oregon Coast night air, came two weary hitch-hikers into the safe-haven of a busy hamburger joint. It was spring break, and these two young adventurers were spending their week on this little road trip, not sure where they were going, but having fun getting there!
.
Not too long after they began eating the cheapest hamburgers they could afford, a somewhat large gentleman in a long trench-coat, about in his 50’s also came in from the night.
.
But as he approached the counter, for some unknown reason, he fixed his eyes on those two young men, and was drawn to their table, as if by some unseen force.
.
The two young boys looked up to hear what he was going to say.
.
“Boys, I’m going to tell you a truth about life, that you need to be aware of.
.
Needless to say, these two young weekend wayfarers nervously waited in wide-eyed silence to hear what this authority figure now standing before them was going to say.
.
“You know, in this life, you can have anything you want! Anything! Yes, you can have riches, or romance, or power, or whatever else you desire! Because, if you want it bad enough, you’ll get it! Yes, you will!”
.
As this stranger talked, it was evident in his wide-eyes, that he had seen something, or had experienced something out of the ordinary!
.
And the man continued…“But just make sure it’s what you really want, whatever it is! Because, if you want it bad enough…you’re gonna get it! And you’ll have to live with the consequences of whatever it is! Yes, you sure will!”
.
And then, the man turned and walked away, leaving the two boys rather speechless!

CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR!
.
Well, fast-forward about 45 years, to our present-day. Yes, today we have a somewhat
more concise way of saying what that mystery man at the Oregon Coast burger shop said. Today, we merely say, “Careful what you wish for!”
.
Yes, this is a common proverb in today’s world. And even though it’s a worldly saying, it nevertheless carries a lot of Bible truth with it!
.

A NEED TO CONSIDER THE BIBLE
.
For instance, in this year’s presidential election, both political parties have risen to a feverish frenzy on behalf of their favorite candidate! The political rhetoric has been ratcheted up to a high pitch, to the point that fist-fights are probably breaking out, if not physical, then verbal ones!
.
But for the people of the world, this is to be expected. Yes, it’s only normal that the secular elements put so much emphasis and effort into whichever side of the political spectrum they happen to reside.
.
But those who call ourselves Christians, really need to step back from the fray, and quietly consider what the Bible has to say about these things.

POLITICALLY MOTIVATED PREACHERS
.
Oh yes, there are many Christian leaders in the church-world, who vehemently urge the Christian community to get out and vote. “The future of this great nation is at stake!”
.
Yes, we’ve all heard this statement made, and similar ones too! And then they will begin to give us their “flawless” logic as to why this or that candidate must be elected!
.

GOD CHOOSES RULERS
.
But what these proponents of Christian activism do not recall or ignore altogether, is what the Bible says about all this!
.
Listen…“the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomsoever He will, and sets up over it the basest of men.” Daniel 4:17
.
Here we see that it is God who chooses our rulers!
.
It’s not us who decide! No, it’s God who decides!
.
He knows the needs of the populace. And He meets the needs of the nations, according to His divine wisdom and “eternal purpose”. Ephesians 3:11
.

VOTING MAKES NO DIFFERENCE
.
And when you get right down to it, this whole business of voting, is nothing more than an exercise in futility! 
.
Oh yes, God works through our faithless human strivings, and allows our votes to decide who is to be elected and rule over us. But in reality, it is God who makes the final decision! And somehow, He causes the vote to come out the way He wants it to turn out.
.
And quite often, God allows Satan to have a hand in all this. Yes, you can be sure that the Devil is busy making his sinister case before God, as to who it is who should rule.
.
But ultimately, it is God who decides, and not the Devil, nor us!
.

“GOD WORKS ALL THINGS TOGETHER FOR GOOD”
.
Listen again, “And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and He (God) does according to His will in the army of Heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay His hand, or say unto Him, ‘What doest Thou?'” Daniel 4:35
.
Here again, this verse reveals that God’s will is being done here on Earth.
.
Oh no, things are not going as they should, down here on this sinful planet. It’s a horrible world, to say the least!
.
And yet, God is orchestrating world events in such a way that, “all things will work together for good to those who love God, to them who are, ‘The Called’, according to His purpose”. Romans 8:28
.
Yes, God is working together both good things and bad, big and little, in such a way, that will be for our ultimate good, and for God’s eternal glory!

“SO ARE MY WAYS HIGHER THAN YOUR WAYS”
Isaiah 55:9
.
But the big point of this devotional, is that Christians must, “lean NOT on your own understanding” Proverbs 3:5.
.
In other words, we puny little humans only have limited understanding about God’s divine providence in the affairs of this life.
.
Oh yes, we think we know what’s best for the country, or for the state, or for the county or city. But God’s purposes are vastly higher than our tiny little minds can comprehend.
.
And the Bible is filled with account after account about how God gave His people the kinds of rulers who would ultimately teach His professed people to love good, and to hate evil.
.

GOD USES THE WICKED
.
Yes, and sometimes, the Lord chose very evil rulers to govern the people.
.
“Why would God do that?”, you ask? “Why does God not rather choose nice, benign leaders to rule?”
.
Because God quite often uses very evil men to drive out the evil in our own hearts!
.

BY ALL MEANS, GO OUT AND VOTE!

Well, this website never counsels Christians to NOT vote. Go ahead and vote!
.
This website does not necessarily condemn the act of voting. No, but what this website does do, is to exhort Christians to not get so dogmatic about politics.
.
In the simplest terms, “Careful what you wish for!” Because what you or I want, may not be what our Heavenly Father wants, and knows is best for us!
.

OUR PRAYER CLOSET TO BE OUR VOTING BOOTH!

But the bottom line to today’s devotional is this: whether or not I decide to vote, the one thing I must do, is to cast my vote while on my knees in my prayer closet, saying something like, “Oh God, my little tiny brain is not big enough, nor smart enough to know who would be the best choice to accomplish your infinitely wise purposes. So please, you decide who should lead the people! May your divine will be done, and not mine!”
.
Now that kind of voting is infinitely better, and will accomplish far more than merely pulling some lever behind some curtain at some local polling place!
